Hot Dog Stand

I still want to do a hot dog stand shoot! This picture is just a little more chic than I was thinking

Preview of Kelia Shoot

I had the privilege of shooting Roxy surfer and poster girl, Kelia Moniz today. We left town at 6:30 am to make our 8:00 meeting up on the north shore. As we came over the pineapple fields I wondered how the lighting would be with the immense amount of vog filling the sky. The waves were huge and messy, we could see it from miles away. As we passed Chun's I realized what Kelia aka "Sister" was talking about when she texted me about the forecast for big waves. It was huge and stormy. As we headed toward Waimea we saw cars parked about a mile from the beach and hopefuls walking toward the bay in hopes of a chance to see the big wave contest, the Eddie take place. We arrived at our destination of the shoot about 15 minutes early and decided to scout. To my pleasant suprise, the rocks I had wanted to shoot on were partially submerged in the huge surf. This created a whole new element of creativity to me and I was excited despite the grey skies. Sister arrived shortly afterward. I hadn't seen her in years probably and she was gorgeous as ever with a contagious smile. She was worried about the lack of sun and the big surf but I assured her that it would be even more fun to shoot today because of the unusual conditions. We headed down to the beach and started to shoot, my handy stylist by my side and islands of sand and rock to shoot on. Sister was a natural in front of the camera probably due to years of surfing for Roxy. For her it was just a way of life for she and her family. It's kind of a beautiful thing, Sister is able to live the dream with her family because they all get to do what they love together. She has surfed for Roxy for 5 years, since she was 13 and gotten to travel all over the world to surf, compete and model. Although she has had so many opportunities and is blessed with beauty and charisma, she seems like she has a strong sense of self and is kept grounded by her family.
The photos we took came out great, so great it was hard to choose which ones to keep. That's what happens when I have a great model, stylist and location I guess. Hopefully we'll see the pictures and the soon to be article in Western Civ online magazine. For now it's finally bed time, more shoots in the morning. Love love love
